NAMA CONDUCTS FACTORY ASSESSMENT TEST OF COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT IN GERMANY.

CHUKS OKOH As part of efforts to modernize the Nigerian airspace infrastructure, a team of NAMA officials is currently at the Rhode and Shwarz factory in Germany on a factory assessment test (FAT) of critical communication equipment needed to enhance the efficiency of the agency’s air-ground communication infrastructure.  Led by the Managing Director of NAMA, Engr Farouk Ahmed Umar, the team will hold high-level talks with officials of Rhode and Schwarz as well as Deo Makro Ltd, an indigenous contractor which facilitated the visit. As part of the project, NAMA will be deploying the Rohde & Schwarz High-Frequency (HF) transceiver, equipped with advanced signal processing algorithms that significantly reduce the noise levels typically associated with traditional HF systems. This technology leap is expected to boost the long-range air-to-ground communications capabilities across the Nigerian airspace.  It is specifically designed to address the range limitations of the current Very High Frequency (VHF) systems. The new HF solution would ensure robust and reliable communication coverage over the Gulf of Guinea, extending far into the Atlantic Ocean, across the Northern desert regions beyond the Kano Flight Information Region (FIR). Speaking on the visit, Engr Farouk expressed optimism that the deployment of the communication equipment would further boost upper airspace communication in the country, stressing that “this move aligns with the commitment of the President towards enhancing the safety of the sector through upgrading and modernizing airspace infrastructure.”

GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO AND OBA EWUARE: UNITED FOR EDO STATE DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS.

By:  Sebastine Ebhuomhan In a landmark, historic event, Edo State governor, His Excellency, Monday Okpebholo on Thursday visited the palace of the monarch of Benin Kingdom, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, to share the joy of his epochal victory on Wednesday, 2nd April, 2025, the day Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja unanimously affirmed his free, fair, credible and popular governorship election in September, 2024. Widely approved, supported and applauded by political observers, social commentators and communal advocates as an important task in the tradition of recognising the cultural, spiritual and divine role of the greatest throne, the visit drew thousands of appreciative well-wishers and residents of Benin City out of their homes and from the other parts of the state, ultimately resulting to the brief figurative shutdown of the capital city, Nigeria’s Heartbeat, as Oba Ewuare happily hosted his visitor, once again. Draped in humility, Governor Okpebholo drove into the palace and walked unto the throne of a beckoning ecstatic Oba Ewuare, CFR; knelt down to greet His Royal Majesty as it is customary; and, like a lion, roared, “Oba ghator kpere, Ise,” in expression of his heartfelt gratitude for the monarch’s support, guidance, advice and prayer. In an open reciprocation of the governor’s simplicity, character, integrity, loyalty, sagacity and gratitude, Oba Ewuare stood up from his throne, walked to the governor and lifted him up from his knees to an embrace thus underlining the intertwining of love, care, respect, peace, unity, focus, determination and unanimity of purpose between the political leader and the traditional leader in the interests of the state and the people of the state. Indeed, Edo State is blessed with the ideas and solutions to tackle its challenges. Addressing His Royal Majesty, Governor Okpebholo said, “I am here in the palace to let you know that the issues of the election petition tribunal between Monday Okpebholo and Asue Ighodalo have been resolved. It was resolved in favour of Monday Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress (APC). “The three judges agreed that Senator Monday Okpebholo won the September 21st governorship election in Edo State. Three parties took APC to the tribunal and all the cases were thrown out by the judges. This means that I am the duly elected governor of Edo State. “Your Majesty, I am here to thank you and Edo people for the love, prayers, and support shown to my administration. I will continue to do my best and work for Edo people and ensure that they enjoy the dividends of democracy.” As he has been accustomed in his interactions with visitors to the palace, the monarch did not hide or belie his emotion. He was pleased with the outcome of the tribunal judgement. It was painstakingly detailed by the Tribunal Chairman, Honourable Justice Wilfred Kpochi and unanimously assented by the other two judges, Honourable Justices K. B. Yusuf and A. A. Adewole, contrary to the split decision the opposition leaked and forwarded on social media before hand. For emphasis, the judgement left no stone unturned in the losers’ search for justice. The tribunal dismissed the petition of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asuerinme Ighodalo, for failing to prove allegations of over-voting, non-compliance and dumping of evidence on the tribunal. Particularly, the tribunal held that Okpebholo would still have won even if all disputed votes were deducted from his total valid votes. As for the other two equally dismissed petitions, the Action Alliance (AA) and the Accord Party (AP), the judgements showed they had no reason for wasting colossal time and money in pursuit of nothing. So, instead of interceding through a palace chief as it is the practice, Oba Ewuare personally prayed for Governor Okpebholo, his family, and his administration’s success. Communicating in the language of his ancestors, he declared Okpebholo’s tribunal victory a victory for Edo people. He recounted how evil doers had sought to destroy the state with their machinations. He thanked Okpebholo for not giving in. “It shall be well with you, your wife, and children. Our ancestors approve your journey to Edo. Our ancestors brought you to restore the lost glory of Edo State, which evil doers do not want. We have been praying and we will continue to pray for you not to allow evil forces to destroy Edo.” “The tribunal judgment is a victory for Edo people. The governor has been doing well for the state after hitting the ground running. I am supposed to travel today on a working visit, but when I heard that he was coming, I had to wait for him. “As we heard that he wants to bring his victory to his father, I had to wait for him. He is my traditional son. We will do our best to keep praying for him and play a fatherly role for him. “The governor is a traditional son. We will not speak much. This is significant as we have not done this before. I appeal to the sons and daughters of the Oba, chiefs in the palace, that we will not allow our son to kneel for too long. We have not done this before: leaving the throne to lift a person up from his knees. The ancestors directed us to do this. “I encourage you to work harder. And I know you have been working so hard that some times, you have no time to play. We thank you for coming here first. Thank you so much,” Oba Ewuare concluded, as he walked from his throne to lift the governor from his knees for an embrace. Ordinarily, a linear-patterned relationship in which the monarch customarily mentors with cultural, traditional, spiritual and socio-political guidance to the governor without any interference in governance, this present relationship, unlike the one-sided with the immediate past governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, is founded on mutual respect, integrity, and accountability. Like his father, Oba Erediauwa, Oba Ewuare II welcomes every personality—political leader or not, that loves and works for the people, who genuinely visits

HOW WE INTERCEPTED EXOTIC CANNABIS INSIDE MATTRESSES _ NDLEA

CHUKS OKOH, Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tincan Island Port Strategic Command Lagos, have discovered a large quantity of exotic cannabis drugs hidden inside mattresses during a routine search of import containers. According to the Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the illicit consignment was a product of a meticulous search operation on containers that originated from Montreal, Canada. A total of 63.75 kilograms of cannabis indica were recovered during the operation. Commander Mitchell explained that the incessant interception of cannabis indica was due to the growing appetite of drug users for Canadian-grown cannabis over locally produced cannabis. “We have observed a preference for imported cannabis over locally grown ones by drug users. The price of the imported drugs is also far higher, and that is the reason drug traffickers are desperate to smuggle the drugs into the country. This seizure was made possible through diligent surveillance and teamwork.” Speaking further on how the seizure was made, Mitchell said that “as part of efforts to prevent the use of the Tincan Island Port Strategic Command in illicit drug trafficking, our quest for drug interception was aptly rewarded when we uncovered 128 parcels of dried weeds inside a Montreal container. Three parcels of the drug were hidden in the trunk of a Toyota Venza, while 125 parcels were cleverly tucked away in two big mattresses. Officers had to cut open the mattresses to recover the hidden drugs. In all, the operation yielded 128 parcels of cannabis with a combined weight of 63.75 kilograms. Save for our vigilance, the drugs would have caused devastating damage to the nation.” Commenting on reasons for the import of cannabis indica from Canada and what the Agency is doing to prevent the illicit import of drugs, Commander Mitchell said that “reasons for the growing preference for Canadian-grown cannabis include a penchant for exotic products, higher potency and the legalisation of recreational use of cannabis in Canada. Unfortunately, cannabis is the most abused drug in the country, with unprecedented socioeconomic, cultural and health consequences. We are therefore working assiduously to strengthen inspection mechanisms at the seaport as well as international collaboration.” The Agency also confirmed that the suspected receiver of the shipment, Bamidele Joseph, is in custody and is currently being questioned as part of an ongoing investigation. The success of this operation underscores the commitment of NDLEA officers toward combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of the public. The commander pledged to remain vigilant in eradicating the illicit flow of narcotic drugs in the country. “As investigations continue, the command is working assiduously to identify all parties involved in the importation of the illicit drugs into the country. The members of the public should provide any information related to drug trafficking activities. The interception of this significant shipment is a reminder of the constant battle against illegal drugs and their devastating impact on society. All those found guilty shall be dealt with according to the NDLEA Act. This will further discourage members of the public from indulging in drug trafficking.” Commander Mitchell stated. The NDLEA Chairman Chief Executive Officer, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa, expressed satisfaction with the discovery of the drugs inside mattresses. The Agency boss therefore urged the officers not to relent in ensuring a drug-abuse-free nation.

AIR CARGO THRIVES DESPITE CHALLENGES _ OMOKHODION

CHUKS OKOH Despite the inherent challenges of global cargo movement, the air cargo business in Nigeria remains resilient, according to Dr. Lucky Omokhodion, a prominent frontline cargo agent. Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new executive council of the Domestic Airport Cargo Agents (DACAA) in Lagos, Dr. Omokhodion, who chairs Ehi Multi Systems Nigeria Limited, identified the critical shortage of dedicated cargo aircraft and inadequate airport facilities as major impediments facing operators. He highlighted that the absence of sufficient cargo planes forces agents to rely heavily on passenger aircraft for transporting goods across the nation, leading to significant inefficiencies and increased operational costs. “We do not have cargo flights; we only have passenger flights, and it is through these that we take all cargo across the nation,” he stated. He further emphasized that the current reliance on passenger planes presents an unsustainable business model that stifles the growth potential of the air cargo sector. Recent operational disruptions experienced by domestic carriers, such as the temporary grounding of Dana Air and issues with Arik Air, have further exacerbated the situation, bringing the air cargo business to a near standstill at times. In addition to the lack of aircraft, Dr. Omokhodion pointed to the inadequacy of facilities at domestic airports as another significant challenge contributing to the hardship faced by cargo agents. However, he expressed optimism that ongoing collaborations between cargo agents and airport authorities would lead to the construction of suitable warehouses to streamline cargo movement. Addressing the newly inaugurated DACAA executive, Dr. Omokhodion urged them to foster unity and inclusivity within the association, expressing his hope that their leadership would elevate the organization to greater heights. Dr. Omokhodion also shed light on the high capital investment required for acquiring and operating dedicated cargo aircraft, which acts as a major deterrent for potential investors. He explained the economic realities, stating, “For a cargo aircraft to fly from Lagos to Abuja, for instance, it needs to be fully loaded with goods for both legs of the trip. If it flies back empty or half-empty, the investor incurs significant losses.” The CEO warned that the scarcity of cargo planes has already resulted in financial losses for air cargo operators, with some clients opting for alternative transportation methods. The situation has also led to the spoilage of perishable goods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, due to flight cancellations and delays. Despite the significant upfront costs, Dr. Omokhodion called upon investors to consider the long-term benefits of investing in cargo aircraft, emphasizing the necessity of finding sustainable and profitable models for such ventures. The prevailing shortage of dedicated cargo aircraft poses severe implications for the Nigerian air cargo industry, leading to delays, financial losses for operators and customers, and overall frustration. Industry stakeholders and the Nigerian government are urged to collaboratively address this critical issue and explore viable solutions to overcome the lack of dedicated cargo aircraft and improve infrastructure at domestic airports.
