OMOKARO RAISES ALARM OVER SHORTAGE OF VETERINARY DOCTORS IN EDO STATE ABATTOIRS

By Osehobo Ofure. The National President of the National Butchers Employers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Sunny Omokaro, has raised alarm over the acute shortage of veterinary doctors in Edo State’s slaughterhouses, warning that the situation poses a serious public health threat. Speaking in Benin City after a recent inspection of abattoirs across the South-South geopolitical zone, Omokaro described the situation in Edo State as dire, lamenting that over 70% of animals slaughtered daily are not inspected by qualified veterinary personnel. “It is a clear and present danger,” Omokaro declared. “By law, no animal should be slaughtered for public consumption without thorough pre-slaughter and post-slaughter inspection by a veterinary doctor. Sadly, in Edo State today, this law is being violated daily because the state has only eight veterinary doctors—four in the field and four confined to office duties.” He stressed that the absence of veterinary oversight could have catastrophic consequences, warning that in the event of a meat-borne epidemic, it would be impossible to trace the source due to the lapses in inspection. “In the past, veterinary doctors were stationed permanently at abattoirs, supervising the entire slaughter process from start to finish. Now, they are hardly seen, and the abattoirs are left in the hands of butchers and health officers who are often overwhelmed or untrained,” he noted. Omokaro also decried the deteriorating state of slaughterhouses in the state, accusing local government councils of negligence and complicity by granting licenses to individuals without proper facilities or professional training. “The law is clear, but the authorities are looking the other way. The local governments collect revenue daily from these abattoirs, yet they ignore the rot and the looming disaster. They must wake up to their responsibility, ensure the presence of veterinary doctors in all abattoirs, and stop licensing unqualified operators,” he stated. Omokaro called on the Edo State Government to urgently recruit more veterinary doctors and deploy them to all slaughterhouses, warning that failure to act could result in a public health crisis.”The time to act is now. Government must take this matter seriously before we face an outbreak that could have been prevented,” he warned.

LEADING WITH VISION: MRS KUKU’s IMPACT ON FAAN.

CHUKS OKOH, The popular saying that ‘what a man can do, a woman can do even better is playing out fast, at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), where Mrs Olubunmi kuku is holding sway as the Managing Director, Chief Executive officer of the Authority.   There is clear indication that FAAN is on another pedestal in terms of revenue generation, human capital development and in the provision of infrastructure upgrade less than two years the present MD was appointed by the federal government. Her approach and style, coupled with the ability to get things done fast, shows that she was prepared before coming on board with much energy and innovations in the system during their time.   Being the foot soldier of the present Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Barrister Festus keyamo, Nigerians are hopeful that better days are ahead in the aviation industry for common good of all stakeholders. It remains  a landmark appointment and equally a departure from the old order (men dominated sector in the past), when on the 18th December, 2023 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu broke the jinx and, endorsed the appointment of Mrs kuku. As it stands, she is the first woman ever to occupy the highest office in FAAN many years after the authority was carved out from the defunct Nigeria Airport Authority(NAA). Since her appointment interestingly, it has been one success story after another, especially in the areas of infrastructure upgrade, provision of modern equipment to enhance seamless operations and conducive atmosphere  upon which the workers now operates. For example, under Mrs Kuku, the revenue growth in FAAN has quadrupled less than two years she assumed office. FAAN’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), rose to over N112 billion, a significant improvement from N54.3 billion in 2023 and N30.5 billion in 2022 respectively. In the area of manpower training, the authority is not lagging behind  also. Between when this administration came on stream and now, FAAN has recorded the training of over 4,000 staff, and critical personnel across six safety-critical courses and still counting at the Authority’s Training School, hitherto upgraded to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), recommended standards. Talking about infrastructural development, reconstruction and rehabilitation of internal roads, terminals, conveyor belts, and most importantly eradication of touts and undesirable elements, to enhance security and well-being of passengers also have gained serious attention of the management. FAAN also is not leaving any stone unturned in the area of promoting industrial harmony, all in a bid to ensure that consumers of its services and other major players in the system gets value for their money. The idea of strategic partnerships and incentives also introduced by the current management has led to boost of airport revenue generation and collaboration with key agencies and various stakeholders, thereby ensuring cooperation and synergies with all players in the industry. Not done yet, customer experience through enhanced airport facilities and services, priotized institutional capacity building and staff welfare, attraction of foreign students from neighbouring African countries to train in FAAN training school and the promotion of FAAN’s image vie collaboration with national and international bodies speaks volume of how determined and ready the leadership of FAAN is, to ensure that FAAN competes efficiently and favourably with other airport groups in the world. Analysts in the aviation sector are in unison, saying that, the coming of the current Chief Executive Officer is a blessing, and therefore should be supported and encouraged to do more. The development in FAAN according to them have brought succor and positive changes, and as such have proven that women really can be trusted with any position in the land no matter how sophisticated and challenging such an office may appear. The readiness of the authority to decentralize cargo processing and provide room for equitable access to modern logistics infrastructure across airports in the country appear to be what the industry need at this time to support the nations economic goals that is very dear to the heart of the federal government. This was echoed recently during the unveiling ceremony of new domestic cargo processing facility at the General Aviation Terminal(GAT). The Director  of Commercial and Business Development, Ms Joy Agunbiade who represented the FAAN MD at the event explained that, the whole idea is to promote efficiency and connectivity of cargo operations at Lagos airport. This development no doubt is in tandem with FAAN’s strategic roadmap that is aimed at optimizing Nigeria’s cargo movement ostensibly targeted to stamp its position in the global logistics chain which the present Chief Executive officer, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku is vigorously pursuing. With the feat already recorded within this short period, chances are that, the authority will continue to break new grounds in every facet of its operations for the common good

THE BAIL IS FREE SAGA IN NIGERIA

“COMPEL I. G. P. EGBETOKUN TO MAKE BAIL A TRULY FREE AFFAIR IN OUR COUNTRY”,  Comrade Igbotako Nowinta . Social critic and human rights activist, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta, has challenged President Bola Tinubu, to compel the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately give directives to make bail a truly free affair in all the police stations across Nigeria. Nowinta, an international conflict resolution expert, who doubles as the Executive – Director, Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC),  disclosed this in an interview with PEOPLE’S STANDARD. In a bold step toward the protection and promotion of human rights in Nigeria, Civil Society activists in Edo/ Delta, successfully secured the unconditional release of two innocent citizens, Umukoro Henry and Godfrey Jonah yesterday, who were wrongfully arrested and detained on allegations of murder, by Officers of the Oghara Police Division, and subsequently transferred to the Delta State Police Command Headquarters, Asaba. According to  Nowinta,” we use this medium to stand shoulder to shoulder with the human rights advocacy campaign titled “BAIL IS FREE”, which was officially launched in Asaba, Delta State capital, a few days ago; and which was led by Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director, Africa Network for Environment & Economic Justice (ANEEJ)”. “Even as we commend profusely, all the civil society activists that participated in the historic launching of the “Bail Is Free Campaign”, it is a matter of facts that what we see happening within the police stations in Nigeria is utterly disgusting, barbaric and inhuman, where innocent citizens are being subjected to a situation worse than slavery”. “We at the Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC), are worried that the issue of bail is a national torment, which has become a ticket pass to instant wealth by some police officers in Nigeria, who are now monsters that wears the cloak of law enforcement agencies. Using the instrumentality of ‘bail is free’, these unscrupulous police officers, such that played out glaringly in Asaba, Delta State, have transformed into dynamites killing our people systematically and remorsefully”. “It is sad to note that the foundation of democracy is crumbling here, as the cabal currently in control is doing everything possible to move in the direction of one party state, while the vulnerable are constantly under severe attack and intimidation from some rogue police officers, using bail as a destructive weapon to impoverish and incapacitate innocent law abiding citizens”. “Indeed, the bail issue has become one of the humiliating savagery happening under our noses; it lingers in echoes of excruciating pains and oppression; this is one of the deepest pictures of man’s inhumanity to man in our clime. Simply put, the police system has become a scourge to countless Nigerians, via the evil negative application of the mechanism of bail”. “Therefore, we call on President Bola Tinubu to act now without delay! This government must commit itself to truth, justice, transparency and national development, by ordering the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately issue a directive to all police formations in the country cum put in place a crack monitoring team, to stop the gigantic sleaze being practiced against our people. This is the time to stop oppression, repression and exploitation of innocent Nigerians by some criminal police officers. Bail should be made a truly free affair in our country!”

This initiative has led to the completion and equipping of this domestic cargo processing facility. Kuku said it was more than just a facility as the warehouse represented a bold step toward efficiency, connectivity, and sustainable economic growth, as well as a significant mark in the ongoing efforts to build and modernize Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, enhance cargo operations, and boost economic growth. “Cargo movement is the lifeblood of commerce, powering industries, supporting businesses, and creating opportunities. According to Thomas, the unveiling of the facility remained a significant step towards a more interconnected and economically vibrant Nigeria adding that it was the beginning. He added that the next phase will be the full development of full-scale domestic cargo hubs at airports across the country. “These hubs will go beyond being mere storage spaces, they will become state-of-the-art centers for logistics excellence, setting new industry standards and accelerating Nigeria’s aviation-driven economic growth” .

AFRICA’s TRADE FUTURE: LEVERAGING TRUMP 2.0.

CHUKS OKOH   A Commonwealth Scholar, Mr Magnus Onyibe, has urged African leaders to seize the opportunities embedded in the new world order presented by Trump 2.0 to tackle unfair trade on the continent. Onyibe, who is also a columnist, made this assertion at the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS) Public Roundtable  in Lagos. The roundtable has it theme as: Trump 2.0 and Africa. Onyibe, also a columnist, said that African leaders must prioritise their citizens’ welfare over personal opulence. He said: “However, on a larger scale, we also have to blame the world, because the reason Africa is undermined and underperforming is unfair trade. “Unfair trade; meaning that the rest of the world has decided that Africa will be a supplier of raw materials and not of finished goods. “That is why we still export raw cocoa. Do you know that Nigeria earned about $400 million from the export of cocoa seeds in 2022, while Germany, a non-producer of cocoa, earned about $6 billion from chocolates?” he asked. Speaking on industrialisation and Trump 2.0, Onyibe said that Africa was not benefiting from the old world order. “We have been made to be producers of raw materials. With Trump 2.0, he’s changing the world order, and I am saying that Africa should position itself so that it will move out of that cocoon and also become a producer of processed products. “It is about positioning Africa from the old world order to a new world order where it will become more relevant to the world and create more prosperity for the long-suffering people of Africa,” he added. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for deploying an Executive order on fuel subsidy, stating that Nigerians would soon enjoy the gains. Onyibe said that the pump price of fuel had become competitive, there is room for private partnerships in the establishment of refineries, and he foresees a further reduction in the pump price of petrol. He also identified energy as a bottleneck in the quest to seize opportunities but urged private investments in the energy sector. On the part of the convener, Prof. Anthony Kila, CIAPS Director, said that the purpose of the roundtable was to contribute to conversations that shaped lives. According to Kila, these conversations are opportunities to, where possible, give input to things that will affect the general public. “I think the rest of the world, when they look at what is happening in America and elsewhere, needs to think of two things. “Number one is that America is a sovereign country. Technically, they can do whatever they like, whether we like it or not. “What matters is how we react to it and how we influence it. So, it is not enough to say we like what is happening in America or hate it. “What really matters is what consumer citizens, policymakers, and leaders are doing about what’s happening in America and in the rest of the world,” he said. Kila, therefore, called on Nigerian leaders to take cognisance that the world is changing with the new world order and should put three things into perspective. The professor of Strategy and Development said: “One is definitely the need to strengthen their own positions internally and then to decide how they want to act with America, whether they are going to negotiate directly or together with Africa. “To also consider the possibility of a new alignment to review relationships with China, Singapore, the EU and the UK. “To be aware that the America of pre-Trump is not the America of Trump now. It is a different ballgame,” he said.
