NCAA TO EMPOWER OVER 100 AIRPORT COMMUNITY YOUTHS WITH AVIATION SKILLS.

CHUKS OKOH, The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), is to empower over 100 airport communities youths in its Aviation Upskilling Development Programme (AUDP), approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February 2025. The implementation of the AUDP, follows the approval by Tinubu for a national structure for youth empowerment across Ministries and Agencies. To key into this, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has directed agencies under its purview, including the NCAA to align their youth- related efforts with the national framework. Speaking during a programme at the NCAA Annex in Lagos, its Director General, Captain Chris Najomo said over 100 youths have been selected from communities around airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Kano to participate in multidisciplinary sectors. Najomo said the AUDP initiative will assist the youths to understand and navigate their way into the aviation sector. He said: “But, as a deep and firm believer in the future of young Nigerians. We are here to introduce a modest but important initiative: the Aviation Upskilling Development Programme (AUDP). But more importantly, we are here to speak honestly and constructively about the real opportunities that exist in aviation and how you, as young graduates, can position yourselves to take advantage of them. “The Aviation Upskilling Development Programme (AUDP) is not an overnight solution. It is a growing initiative aimed at helping young Nigerians, particularly graduates, understand and begin to navigate their way into aviation. “From documentation systems to surveillance tools, aviation today runs on digital skills. Master tools like Microsoft Excel, basic GIS, safety reporting apps, or data visualization platforms, engaging partners to support skill-building initiatives. We will not over-promise. But we will do our part —step by step— to open the space and carry young Nigerians forward into the aviation future. “To every young person listening to me today: aviation is open to you, but you must be ready to learn, to work, and to lead. The journey may not be easy, but it is worth it. “Let the Aviation Upskilling Development Programme be a conversation starter. Let it be a bridge between where you are and where you want to go. We look forward to walking that bridge with you.” Najomo said the  objectives are to develop skills for key aviation roles, bridge the skills gap, support job creation, foster international collaboration, and promote sustainable aviation practices by equipping professionals with knowledge on sustainable aviation practices, including environmental regulations, renewable energy sources, and green technologies. Through this programme, Najomo said the NCAA seeks to empower the next generation of aviation professionals by offering them the tools and resources required to succeed. It will address the specific training needs of the aviation industry and ensure participants gain a strong foundation in the global standards and best practices that define it today. The target participants are recent graduates from tertiary institutions, undergraduates, and fresh school leavers; young professionals looking for career transition; women and under-represented groups in aviation; and current aviation workers seeking professional development. In her remarks, Director of Human Resources and Administration, Dr. Anastasia Gbem said : ” This initiative is a crucial step towards addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation sector, including talent shortages, regional disparities, and gender imbalances. The AUDP is designed to empower young Nigerians with the skills, knowledge, and guidance they need to succeed in the aviation industry. Our goal is to equip the next generation of aviation professionals with the tools and resources they need to excel in this dynamic industry. ” I  am confident that this initiative will contribute significantly to the growth and development of Nigeria’s aviation industry, creating job opportunities, reducing unemployment, and enhancing our standing in the international aviation community.” In the closing remarks, Regional Manager,  South West, NCAA , Mrs Olubukola  Aduragbemi Teriba  said : ” The NCAA is proud to host this empowerment Programme to align with the NCAA broader vision to build a suitable and globally competitive aviation sector in Nigeria which will prepare and equip the Nigerian youth with specialized technical knowledge needed to confidently step into the array of jobs available within the industry thereby creating jobs opportunities, reducing unemployment and enhancing Nigeria’s image in the international community. “As the regulator, NCAA is not only a custodian of safety, security and economic oversight, but duty bound to ensure inclusivity, access to opportunities and a sustainable future workforce for our industry. “As we gather here today, we are reminded of the challenges faced by Nigeria on how to create jobs for youths, skilled workers in the Aviation Sector. So, this initiative will fill in the gap to prepare young Nigerians by equipping them with technical knowledge which will prepare them to take up jobs available in the aviation industry.”

THE NEED FOR GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO TO FIX EWU ABGEDE OLD ROAD

By Diagi Lucky “Today, Ewu Agbede Old Road has been reduced to a foot path, now in an absolute deplorable condition and left to rot away. Edo State is blessed with a Catholic Monastery. That is to say correctly that one of the best missionary wonders in the world is cited in Ewu Edo State. This crucial access road: Ewu Agbede Old Road should be a top priority for Governor Monday Okpebholo now; it is an idea which time has come. It baseless to think about an alternative road: the Benin Auchi Express Road, which has become moribund. It is utterly disheartening to say that Ewu Agbede Old Road, which is less than five kilometres could not be fixed by successive governments in Edo State”   Ironically, the Ewu Agbede Old Road is less than five kilometres, and it borders Edo Central and Edo North. In the sixties the road was the only accessible road to the Northern part of Nigeria. It will interest you to know that the agro – economy of the old Bendel State was heavily depended on this very important old road. Ewu market used to be the main bus stop and hub of agro and cultural products from Okene in Kogi State, Edo North and beyond, while the Benin traders were the main people transporting goods to the cities. Today, Ewu Agbede Old Road has been reduced to a foot path, now in an absolute deplorable condition and left to rot away. It is utterly disheartening to say that Ewu Agbede Old Road, which is less than five kilometres could not be fixed by successive governments in Edo State, from governor Ambrose Ali of blessed memory; John Odigie – Oyegun; Lucky Igbinedion, Prof. Osariemen Osunbor; Adams Oshiomhole, and Godwin Obaseki. Talking about the importance of good network of roads in order to boost macro agricultural products, it is incontrovertible that agricultural roads like the Ewu Agbede old road in Edo State play a significant role in the economic development of a country, particularly in rural areas where agriculture is a major source of livelihood. Agricultural roads provide farmers with access to markets, enabling them to sell their produce and increase their income. Good roads facilitate the transportation of inputs, such as fertilizers and seeds, and outputs, such as crops, which can lead to increased productivity and efficiency. Agricultural roads can reduce transportation costs for farmers, making their products more competitive in the market. The construction and maintenance of agricultural roads can create jobs for local communities, contributing to economic growth and development. Agricultural roads can contribute to rural development by improving access to social services, such as healthcare and education, and facilitating economic activity in rural areas. By improving access to markets and reducing transportation costs, agricultural roads can help ensure food security by increasing the availability of food products. Agricultural roads can contribute to economic growth by increasing agricultural productivity, improving market access, and reducing transportation costs, which can lead to increased economic activity and growth. Overall, agricultural roads are essential for the economic development of rural areas and can play a critical role in promoting economic growth, food security, and poverty reduction in a democracy. History will ever be kind to the government of Senator Monday Okpebholo, if it proactively fix this very essential economic road. All said and done. This is calling on the pragmatic leader: Governor Monday Okpebholo to fix the Ewu Agbede Old Road, so that he would write his name in gold letters as a deserving idol. Diagi Lucky, a public affairs analyst, an indigene of Ewu, contributes this piece from Benin City.

DEMOCRACY DAY IN NIGERIA: INTERROGATING DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA UNDER PRESIDENT TINUBU.

June 12 has been declared as Democracy Day in Nigeria to commemorate the victory of Chief MKO Abiola of blessed memory in the presidential election that was conducted in June 12,1993.The 1993 presidential election which has remained the most credible presidential election in Nigeria ,conducted by my teacher at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka,Prof Humphrey Nwosu of blessed memory was annulled by the military government of Ibrahim Badamasi Babaginda. Nigeria’s government under the leadership of Mohammed Buhari officially recognized MKO Abiola as the winner of the election and subsequently declared June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria .Recently, the former military president, Ibrahim Babaginda in his book “A journey in Service”attempted to explain the factors that were responsible for the annulment. However, the reasons and background, proffered as explanation for the annulment of the election was unavailing . The undeniable conclusion is that the annulment was a brazen subversion of the will of the people. It was also a violation of the laws of Nigeria and a mortal blow to the enthronement and survival of democracy in Nigeria.IBB and his team thought they could remain in office forever, but forgot to realize that the politics of today will become the history of tomorrow. It is the burden of political actors to choose which side of history they which to identify with as nothing endures forever. Democracy Day is significant for political office holders to learn from the history of the 1993 presidential election in Nigeria.Interrogating Democracy Day in Nigeria under president Tinubu is significant for the president to decide which side of history he will prefer to belong because he will not be the president of Nigeria forever. The essence of Democracy Day is for the Nigerian government to be subjected to the rules of democracy and for all the citizens in government or out of government to be subjected to the Rule of Law.The highest achievement of any democratic government is strict adherence to the Rule of Law. President Tinubu was an active participant in the struggle for the actualization of June 12 1993 presidential election. He has been making beautiful speeches on democracy in Nigeria. As expected,he will make a beautiful speech today ,June 12,2025 to commemorate Democracy Day in Nigeria.Unfortunately , democracy in Nigeria under President Tinubu has been under threat. His government has little regard for the core ingredients of democracy. Democratic government without the Rule of Law is a failure and claims to achievements must be similar to the routine brags of essentially authoritarian governments. They mouth the protocols of democracy but at the same curate its worst excesses. All of this will then amount to self glorification and the barely hidden agenda to remain in office at the expense of the welfare of the citizens. The declaration of the State of emergency in Rivers State by President Tinubu, the removal of the democratically elected governor of Rivers State and the dissolution of the House of Assembly were a clear violation of section 305 of the Constitution. Was the minister of Justice and the Attorney general of the federation not aware of a subsisting Supreme Court judgment that declared the removal of an elected governor under the guise of a state emergency, unconstitutional, null and void? There is a willing national Assembly in an unholy collaboration which approved the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State via a voice vote instead of the Constitutional two- third requirement of All the members of the national Assembly.Section 305.(6) b is unambiguous on the requirement of the national Assembly. The Nigerian Bar Association,(NBA), and well meaning and patriotic Nigerians raised their voices in condemnation of the gross violation of the Constitution and the laws of Nigeria by president Tinubu and his national Assembly in the dismantling of the democratic structures of Rivers State. The president remained deaf to these decent reproaches . Instead he brought in a figure who is not not only alien to Rivers State , but comes from the military, a group well known for its instinctive command and obey conventions. The new sole Administrator , was a strange ideological attack on Rivers state and our maturing democracy. The defection of the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly elected on the platform of PDP into the APC was done in the broad day light and in the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The 27 members further deposed to a Court affidavit to affirm their defections and membership of APC. Nigerians expected the Judiciary to interprete section 109.1(g) of the Constitution in respect of the 27 members. The provision of the Constitution is clear, and stipulates that,”a member of a House of Assembly shall vacate his seat in the House of Assembly being a person whose election to the House of Assembly was sponsored by a political party,he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that House was elected”. Instead of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to interpret the Constitution and give judgment on the status of the 27 members,it preferred to castigate the governor for upholding the provisions of the Constitution and order that the governor should obey the laws made by 27 members whose membership of the Rivers State House of Assembly has not been resolved by the Supreme Court. The judgment of the Supreme court that ordered the governor of Rivers State to obey the laws that were made by 27 members whose membership of the House has not been decided by the Supreme Court opened the floodgates for the defection of members of State and national Assembly into the ruling APC in clear violation of section 109.(1)g and section 68.(1)g of the Constitution of Nigeria. What type of democracy do we have in Nigeria where the National Assembly, the president and the Judiciary cannot uphold the Constitution and the laws of the country? In July 11 ,2024 ,the Supreme Court of Nigeria in a landmark Judgment granted Autonomy for the Local Government Councils in Nigeria. This judgment was a response
