CHUKS OKOH, To ensure more Nigerian women are economically independent and contribute to the nation’s development, Enugwu-Ukwu Community Development Union (ECDU) women wing has called for collective action to empower them. EDCU women wing made the call during a fund raising for women empowerment and awards ceremonies in Lagos, urging every Nigerian woman to be more focused in order to take the lead in helping their families adjust to new realities and challenges as well as contribute to the nation’s development. Speaking during the event  which  held in Lagos under the theme” Empower a woman, empower a society”, president Enugwu -Ukwu Community  Development Union (ECDU) women wing, Felicia Agubata  affirmed that when women are empowered, they would be more absorbed, economically independence and have the right mind set to live a meaningful life. On the event which was organised by ECDU women wing, she said: “We are not just here to raise funds; we are empowering women, girls, communities and indeed a nation. We are investing in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities that will have a multiplier impact on the human ecosystem. “To the men and women we are honoring today, I say, your stories, resilience, and determination will continue to inspire current and subsequent generations. “To the women we are empowering through this programme, we are committed to providing you the resources and support you need to pull yourselves out of extreme poverty and joblessness. “Our effort is an acknowledgement that communities and societies must find creative ways to support the government of the day to alleviate hardship, rekindle hope and advance human civilization through concrete action steps.” Agubata who is an engineer recalled that during the past 2 years and 9 months of her tenure as the president of the women arm of ECDU, that her team has consistently developed the capacity of their women and community through various programmes such as; support one indigent scheme; voluntary welfare contributions for their members in need; digital marketing training for women and a host of others. Speaking earlier, Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha emphasised the  need for women empowerment, adding that a woman passes through a lot when she does not have anything to do. According to her, “it is not that these women are lazy, it is not that they do not want to do anything, but something would have happened along the line and they didn’t find their feet, so to get them back to their feet again they need empowerment,  the government cannot do everything all alone’’ Also speaking at the event, Igwe Ralph  Obumnemeh Ekpeh who was represented by the Enugwu-Ukwu Cultural Minister Ozonkpu, Jude Ekwunife defined the fund raising and the empowerment ceremonies as a step in the right direction. TINUBU AND HIS NORTHERN TEACHERS

When last week, Professor Ango Abdullahi threatened that “the North is watching”, what did he mean? You must love the professor of agronomy for his unambiguity. He is not the type that leaves his audience wondering. He concluded his lamentation with a call for action. The North, he reasoned, must demand accountability and be united against the ‘injustice’ meted out to the region. Hear him: “We must be proactive. We will be asking questions. And this time, we expect answers. If we do not speak up and insist on fairness, the marginalisation will continue, and our children will inherit a more broken and divided nation.” The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is just 26 months old. But the North lays all the problems bedevilling the region at the helmsman’s feet. Leaders of that region said that Tinubu and his government should be blamed for the entire woes that have been the lot of the North. They said so with a sickening entitlement mentality and the finality of a Presiding Bishop. That is a big shame! They were also magisterial in a manner that depicts a no-nonsense-cane-wielding class teacher. The North, their leaders submitted, would, through its mouthpiece, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), write to President Tinubu to demand explanations on “some developments” in his government. The region’s elders were not joking. Tinubu, must, for instance, explain: “Why the sudden relocation of CBN departments (from Abuja to Lagos)? Why the mass retirements (where and when)? And why were 15 new directors recently employed -with only four from Northern Nigeria?” Those were the words of Professor Ango Abdullahi, NEF Chairman. He spoke last Tuesday at the Government-Citizens Engagement Forum put together by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF). And President Tinubu had better assemble convincing explanations for “these developments.” Why? The former Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, warned: “These are not coincidences. They are decisions with CONSEQUENCES, and the North is watching!” I do hope Tinubu knows the implication of being watched by Big Brother. If I were Mr. President, I would simply pad my buttocks like we used to do in our primary school days, when we stuffed exercise books into our pants to cushion the effects of the strokes of cane from our teachers. Of course, like Big Brother in George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984, those eagle-eyed teachers always found out our naughty games, removed the exercise books and flogged us like the last cow to the herder! Is the President ready for the flogging of his northern masters? When will the North be asking President Tinubu those ‘pertinent’ questions? When will the region be demanding for “answers?” While we are hazarding a guess, let me summarise the North’s position as enunciated in Kaduna last Tuesday: it is obvious, and very obvious, too, that Nigeria is never one and can never be one! This is the Nigeria of our time. Those who midwifed the contraption called Nigeria must be turning in their graves reading what the northern elite are saying concerning the backwardness of the region. I am not Steve Cavanagh, the author of The Devil’s Advocate. I equally don’t want to play the devil’s advocate here. Tinubu has enough men and women, his night soil men, to carry his can of smelly chamber pots for him. My mission here is to ask us to examine the North and its claim of ‘marginalisation’, ‘injustice’; ‘unfairness’; ‘insecurity’ and ‘education backwardness’ in relation to out-of-school children and determine who is to be blamed. There is a Yoruba saying that has a deep meaning. One cannot put the coral beads on the waist of another child whereas one’s child has a rotund waist, the saying goes. It is a Yoruba call for solidarity. The surface implicature is that one should rally round one of his own. In the deeper sense, it means no matter how bad one’s child is, his conduct must be accommodated in the true sense of solidarity. It is saying that such a badly-behaved child should be preferred to another child from outside the family. In essence, ethnic solidarity should take the front burner above common good. Do I subscribe to that philosophy? I answer by saying that our tendency to condone everything the political class offers us in the name of tiwa n’ti wa (our own is our own) is the bane of our development as a nation. Our inability to call out our relations eating bad insects is the reason why we have not been able to sleep peacefully because of the intermittent whooping cough from the relations. What is bad is always bad. A President should not be ‘supported’ based on where he comes from. Our solidarity, our fidelity and devotion methinks, should be to sterling performances and not to the ethnicity of the driver of our collective destiny. We should be more concerned about abundant life for the people rather than the ethnic background of the President. A North that kept quiet when Muhammadu Buhari drove the vehicle of this nation to the bottomless pit has no right to complain if Tinubu decides to put the vehicle back on the reverse gear with his Stone Age economic policies. Likewise, Tinubu’s brothers and sisters will be eternally wrong to clap and cheer when the man who promised hope is delivering hopelessness! No nation moves forward that way. No meaningful development can take place in a nation populated by the máa jó lo mo ńwo èyìn e (keep dancing, I am watching your back) orchestra even when the percussion churns out discordant tunes! Nigeria can only become a success the day we individually and collectively agree that once one’s child comes with a twisted waist, the coral beads should be tied round the waist of a child with a well-formed waist irrespective of who sired her! This is why I love the balance in the Yoruba worldview. The elders of the land who say one cannot put the coral beads on the waist

FAAN PUBLIC AFFAIRS DIRECTOR BAGS ROLE MODEL AWARD

CHUKS OKOH The Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Obiageli Orah, has been honoured with a Role Model Award at the 13th Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) Nigeria Day in Lagos. Her passionate acceptance speech quickly became one of the high points of the event, resonating deeply with the gathering of women leaders and professionals in the transport and logistics sector. Visibly moved by the unexpected honour, Mrs. Orah said the award affirmed a lifelong message she had championed, that is, women must make themselves visible in order to be seen, heard, and given space to contribute meaningfully to national development. “I wasn’t expecting this, and that’s what makes it even more special,” she said. The award read, “In recognition of your Excellence, Leadership qualities and Impactful contributions, to the growth of Women and the industry at large. The Women in Logistics and Transport Nig. Honour you with WILAT Nig. Prestigious Award of ROLE MODEL You inspire progress and drive change”. “It confirms what I always say: women must rise up and claim their place in society. If you don’t show up and declare your presence, no one will know you’re there, let alone consider you for leadership or meaningful participation.” In a stirring reflection on women’s role in nation-building, the FAAN spokesperson emphasized that visibility and self-assertion are not acts of rivalry with men, but rather essential steps toward equity and inclusion. “We’re not competing with men but we must take our rightful place. Without women, there is no nation. It’s time we own that truth, not just in words but in action.” She further called on women to support one another rather than see each other as threats. According to her, genuine progress can only be achieved when women build bridges of solidarity instead of walls of rivalry. “A woman understands another woman in a way no man can. That’s why sisterly love is powerful. Let’s support each other not tear each other down. That is the only way we will rise together,” she urged. Mrs. Orah expressed gratitude for the recognition and wishing similar acknowledgment for every woman striving to make a difference. “I am so happy for this award, and I hope each of you gets to feel this kind of fulfillment someday. It is truly empowering”. The 13th WiLAT Nigeria Day brought together key voices and stakeholders across the transport and logistics landscape, with a central focus on how Artificial Intelligence and technology can empower women and reshape the industry.

ANAP ENGAGES ABAH AS DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL.

CHUKS OKOH A frontline aviation labour leader, Comrade Ocheme Abah has joined the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP) as the deputy secretary general. Comrade Abah is to deputise for Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu, the Doyen of Aviation Unions. Before moving to ANAP, Comrade Abah worked in different unions, including, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, National Union of Air Transport Employees among others, where he contributed to the development of unionism in the aviation sector. Speaking on behalf of ANAP’s NAC and the association while introducing Comrade Abah, Secretary General of ANAP, Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu, said they have watched Abah’s activities and contributions to the development of unionism in the industry and and expressed the hope that his wealth of experience was greatly needed in ANAP According to Comrade Saidu, Abah’s engagement was approved by principal officers of ANAP after being briefed about the development adding his coming will improve the union and expand ANAP He revealed that the decision to bring Abah on board followed a long search for a capable ally who could share the burden of leadership and contribute meaningfully to the union’s growth. “For a long time, I had insisted that not just anyone should come in. But over time, I observed Comrade Aba’s contributions in public engagements and management meetings, even while he was on a different platform”. “Eventually, we discussed, and I reached out to our principal officers, including the former president, current president, and others and everyone welcomed the idea. After further discussions and a formal offer, today marks his official assumption of duty.” According to Comrade Saidu, the engagement of Abah was part of the  drive to expand its reach, professionalise its engagement with the aviation sector, and step up the fight for the rights and welfare of aviation workers. National Woman Leader of ANAP, Comrade Ogochukwu Ibegbunam, while welcoming Abah,  was optimistic that the union would reach new heights with Abah joining the leadership. “Comrade Saidu has carried the load alone for so long. Now that you are here, we are confident we will go even farther. You are welcome, and we hope you bring your wealth of knowledge and experience to enrich ANAP.” For Comrade Queen Ajayi, the union’s treasurer, described ANAP as a family and expressed hope that Abah’s presence would further strengthen the union. “Even though we may have differences sometimes, we always resolve them and stay united. Your coming will no doubt add value to our work and help grow our membership base. We welcome you warmly,” she said. Responding, Comrade Ocheme Abah, pledged to reposition the union as the foremost voice for aviation workers in Nigeria, describing the occasion as modest but symbolic a beginning, he said, of something truly significant in the life of aviation unionism. “I like humble beginnings, such as this. But I have no doubt that today marks the start of something great for the trade union movement in the aviation sector,” he stated. Abah praised ANAP as an organisation strategically placed by its constitution and jurisdiction to occupy the front row of labour representation in the aviation industry. He noted that nearly every worker in the sector rightly falls within the union’s scope. “In fact, those who fall outside ANAP’s jurisdiction in the entire aviation sector may not exceed 100 persons. This means the overwhelming majority of aviation workers are meant to belong to ANAP. And our task is to ensure that this natural alignment happens lawfully, purposefully, and without conflict.” He revealed that in the weeks ahead, ANAP will roll out new programmes and strategies following internal consultations and engagements. These activities, Abah said, will be geared toward strengthening worker protection, redefining labour-management relations, and expanding the union’s reach through legitimacy rather than rivalry. “Our actions will be felt across the industry not in confrontation with other unions, but in a way that positively impacts workers and asserts ANAP’s rightful place. We aim to create a more organized, collaborative structure for worker representation, and we’ll do that in partnership with stakeholders.” Comrade Abah also emphasized the need for internal reforms, promising a forward-looking, inclusive structure within ANAP to accommodate all eligible members and meet emerging challenges. “We must be expansive in our thinking and restructure ourselves from within to be more responsive and effective. That journey starts now.” Reflecting on his departure from the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Abah expressed deep appreciation for the experiences and collaborations he had there, saying they shaped him for this new role. “I am grateful to NUATE for the platform it provided me, and to all the officers and members I had the privilege of working with. I bring with me the same energy and perhaps even more to ANAP.” Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that ANAP can become not just a frontline union in aviation, but a model for trade unionism in Nigeria. He said the union’s growth would come through strategic, lawful action not by poaching members, but by simply occupying its natural space. “We will not be dragged into unnecessary turf battles. Those housing ANAP members unlawfully will be addressed through legal and structured approaches. Our goal is unity and rightful representation.” Abah assured members of his unwavering dedication to the union’s mission. “This is the third union I have had the honour to serve in, and my commitment remains total. I will be faithful to the cause, and together, we shall succeed in building a stronger, better ANAP.” Comrade Ngozi Tochi Igbokwe, Women Leader, Lagos branch, in her vote of thanks, emphasized the need for members to work together in achieving the goals of the union.
