This was not just disruptive; it was a sustained, violent attack that placed the lives of crew, passengers, and the integrity of the aircraft itself at risk. This behaviour is unacceptable. Therefore, effective immediately, the AON has placed Ms. Emmanson on its ‘No Fly’ list indefinitely. She is hereby banned from flying with any AON member either domestically or internationally for life. BLIND , PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED CRIPPLE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AT THE AIRPORT

CHUKS OKOH Economic and business were grounded for over 7 hours Monday at the airport as over 100 disabled people barracaded access roads to both local and international airports in Lagos following what they called government neglect They brought to a halt the usually bustling access roads to Lagos Murtala Muhammed Airport as over hundreds of blind and physically challenged Nigerians staged a dramatic protest, forcing traffic to a standstill and leaving scores of air travellers stranded. The protesters, members of the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind, converged in their hundreds, wielding placards, chanting slogans, and forming an unyielding human barricade. They came in various vehicles prepared to stay put at the airport until their request was met as they carried along with them foods and children. According to them, their school has been closed since 2023 and government failed to meet their demands despite series of meetings and correspondence hence they decided to cripple the aviation industry where they said belong to the elites One of the officials of the group, Mr. Dolor, said the demonstration was born out of frustration after repeated appeals to government authorities yielded no results. “You can see them,  blind people, disabled people, angry because there’s no welfare for us,” he said, his voice shaking with a mix of pain and determination. “Many of us are forced to beg to survive, and even that is frowned upon by society. We have our own school, the School of the Blind, the School of the Disabled but it has been locked for years. We have written letters, travelled to Abuja, knocked on every door, but no one listens. So today, we have come to the road. If they will not give us education or care, then they must at least hear our voices.” According to him the school is located in the Isheri area, has been closed since around 2022, leaving more than 500 registered members and hundreds more from other communities without access to formal learning or skills training. He insisted, “This is not a fight. We are not here to cause harm. We see the President as a father. But we know that many things happen in this country and never reach his ears. Blocking this road is the only way to be sure he will hear us.” The protest became uncontrollable when some security agents threaten to use force which led to the group taken over the access road by ordering their members to start lying on the main road. Travelers, both foreigners and Nigerians were seen trekking long didlstances with their luggage as the protest  paralysed vehicular movement on key routes into the airport, causing severe delays for passengers. In a statement, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the disruption, advising passengers to check traffic updates, confirm flight schedules with their airlines, and use alternative routes. “We apologize for any inconvenience caused and call for patience and understanding”. All efforts by airport security and the Nigerian Air Force to persuade the protesters to disperse failed. The demonstrators, unmoved by appeals from officials, vowed to remain on the road until a representative of the Federal Government addresses them directly. For now, the road remains blocked, the air thick with chants of protest and the hopes of a forgotten community resting on whether their cries will finally reach the corridors of power.

ANAP CONDEMNS GROWING UNABATING PASSENGER BEHAVIOUR

CHUKS OKOH. The Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP) has expressed concerned about the unprovoked, unabating and uncivilized behaviour of unruly passengers in recent times. In a statement tilted, ‘unruly passengers saga, a case for protection of aviation workers against violent passenger behaviour’ signed by the Secretary General of ANAP, Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu, said it seriously called for actions from airlines, airports and regulatory authorities to curb and contain such incidences. ANAP called on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority to review its existing protocols on violent passenger behaviour “We invite the Nigerian Civil Aviation authority to urgently review existing protocols on violent passenger behaviour and reinvigorate enforcement methods at the aerodromes, especially with regard to protection of aviation workers from criminal harm makers in the form of unwanted unruly passengers” It noted that the August 5, 2025 incidence at the tarmac of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja involving Wasiu Ayinde (aka Kwam 1) and ValueJet (a Nigerian airline) remains a news headliner, while another incidence on August 10, 2025 involving a certain Ms Comfort Emmanson who travelled on Ibom Air from Uyo to Lagos remained source of concern According to ANAP all the narratives so far concerning the incidences have focused on the unbecoming and unlawful behaviour (of Kwam 1 and Ms Emmanson), professional conducts (of pilots and aviation security personnel), as well as security implications of the incidences for passengers, aircraft and aerodromes. “Unfortunately, a very important aspect of the incidences has somehow escaped the attention of analysts, stakeholders and the public at large: the oft neglected, but worrisome danger and risks aviation workers face in the course of their daily duties. The reports and video footages in both incidences show clearly the physical and psychological assault and trauma visited on both ground staff and air crews” ANAP said in the meantime, that airlines and the airport authority should adequately provide medical attention and financial compensations for the staff of both ground and air, who have suffered any form of harm arising from these incidences. According to the union, this will demonstrate their duty of care towards their employees.   “It is important to warn the travelling public that such indecent behaviour is highly unwelcome in the aviation world. And we call on the airlines, airports and regulatory authorities to apply maximum sanctions including legal prosecution to act as deterrent” ANAP assured  all aviation workers of the readiness and capability of ANAP to stand up for each and all and urged all aviation workers to regard ANAP as home and to call for help at any time of distress.

We urge the public to allow ongoing investigations to reach their logical conclusion before drawing premature conclusions or making speculative statements. Visibly moved by the unexpected honour, Mrs. Orah said the award affirmed a lifelong message she had championed, that is, women must make themselves visible in order to be seen, heard, and given space to contribute meaningfully to national development. “I wasn’t expecting this, and that’s what makes it even more special,” she said. Honour you with WILAT Nig. Prestigious Award of ROLE MODEL You inspire progress and drive change”. “It confirms what I always say: women must rise up and claim their place in society. ANAP ENGAGES ABAH AS DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL.

CHUKS OKOH A frontline aviation labour leader, Comrade Ocheme Abah has joined the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP) as the deputy secretary general. Comrade Abah is to deputise for Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu, the Doyen of Aviation Unions. Before moving to ANAP, Comrade Abah worked in different unions, including, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, National Union of Air Transport Employees among others, where he contributed to the development of unionism in the aviation sector. Speaking on behalf of ANAP’s NAC and the association while introducing Comrade Abah, Secretary General of ANAP, Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu, said they have watched Abah’s activities and contributions to the development of unionism in the industry and and expressed the hope that his wealth of experience was greatly needed in ANAP According to Comrade Saidu, Abah’s engagement was approved by principal officers of ANAP after being briefed about the development adding his coming will improve the union and expand ANAP He revealed that the decision to bring Abah on board followed a long search for a capable ally who could share the burden of leadership and contribute meaningfully to the union’s growth. “For a long time, I had insisted that not just anyone should come in. But over time, I observed Comrade Aba’s contributions in public engagements and management meetings, even while he was on a different platform”. “Eventually, we discussed, and I reached out to our principal officers, including the former president, current president, and others and everyone welcomed the idea. After further discussions and a formal offer, today marks his official assumption of duty.” According to Comrade Saidu, the engagement of Abah was part of the  drive to expand its reach, professionalise its engagement with the aviation sector, and step up the fight for the rights and welfare of aviation workers. National Woman Leader of ANAP, Comrade Ogochukwu Ibegbunam, while welcoming Abah,  was optimistic that the union would reach new heights with Abah joining the leadership. “Comrade Saidu has carried the load alone for so long. Now that you are here, we are confident we will go even farther. You are welcome, and we hope you bring your wealth of knowledge and experience to enrich ANAP.” For Comrade Queen Ajayi, the union’s treasurer, described ANAP as a family and expressed hope that Abah’s presence would further strengthen the union. “Even though we may have differences sometimes, we always resolve them and stay united. Your coming will no doubt add value to our work and help grow our membership base. We welcome you warmly,” she said. Responding, Comrade Ocheme Abah, pledged to reposition the union as the foremost voice for aviation workers in Nigeria, describing the occasion as modest but symbolic a beginning, he said, of something truly significant in the life of aviation unionism. “I like humble beginnings, such as this. But I have no doubt that today marks the start of something great for the trade union movement in the aviation sector,” he stated. Abah praised ANAP as an organisation strategically placed by its constitution and jurisdiction to occupy the front row of labour representation in the aviation industry. He noted that nearly every worker in the sector rightly falls within the union’s scope. “In fact, those who fall outside ANAP’s jurisdiction in the entire aviation sector may not exceed 100 persons. This means the overwhelming majority of aviation workers are meant to belong to ANAP. And our task is to ensure that this natural alignment happens lawfully, purposefully, and without conflict.” He revealed that in the weeks ahead, ANAP will roll out new programmes and strategies following internal consultations and engagements. These activities, Abah said, will be geared toward strengthening worker protection, redefining labour-management relations, and expanding the union’s reach through legitimacy rather than rivalry. “Our actions will be felt across the industry not in confrontation with other unions, but in a way that positively impacts workers and asserts ANAP’s rightful place. We aim to create a more organized, collaborative structure for worker representation, and we’ll do that in partnership with stakeholders.” Comrade Abah also emphasized the need for internal reforms, promising a forward-looking, inclusive structure within ANAP to accommodate all eligible members and meet emerging challenges. “We must be expansive in our thinking and restructure ourselves from within to be more responsive and effective. That journey starts now.” Reflecting on his departure from the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Abah expressed deep appreciation for the experiences and collaborations he had there, saying they shaped him for this new role. “I am grateful to NUATE for the platform it provided me, and to all the officers and members I had the privilege of working with. I bring with me the same energy and perhaps even more to ANAP.” Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that ANAP can become not just a frontline union in aviation, but a model for trade unionism in Nigeria. He said the union’s growth would come through strategic, lawful action not by poaching members, but by simply occupying its natural space. “We will not be dragged into unnecessary turf battles. Those housing ANAP members unlawfully will be addressed through legal and structured approaches. Our goal is unity and rightful representation.” Abah assured members of his unwavering dedication to the union’s mission. “This is the third union I have had the honour to serve in, and my commitment remains total. I will be faithful to the cause, and together, we shall succeed in building a stronger, better ANAP.” Comrade Ngozi Tochi Igbokwe, Women Leader, Lagos branch, in her vote of thanks, emphasized the need for members to work together in achieving the goals of the union.
