RAMADAN: FAAN MD BREAKFAST WITH MUSLIMS.

CHUKS OKOH, The Managing Director the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku has joined Muslim brothers and sisters in the airport community  to continue to uphold the tenets of their religion to promote unity and peaceful co-existence in order to build a peaceful airport environment and the nation at large. Mrs. Kuku spoke when she hosted muslim ummahs at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and those within the airport environs for an Iftar dinner at the FAAN corporate headquarters, admonished Muslims to be model of good morals in their dealings both in private and public life. The historic event drew over 300 muslim men and women who broke their fast with the FAAN MD and thereafter observed the Maghrib prayer where they prayed for  Mrs. Kuku, FAAN and the entire nation Kuku said the country is blessed with God fearing people in  different religious bodies, adding that the fear of God among the citizens has ensured the country make giant progress in all spheres. She recalled that having been raised in a muslim home under her grandmother, she appreciated the critical role a good religious upbringing help in shaping the growth and development of individuals and the country. Kuku said “My grandmother is a Muslim. I was raised with her in a muslim family, but religion does not define us. It doesn’t divide us and it doesn’t defile us. it is our hearts as peoples that shows the posterity and the importance. It is indeed a thing of joy that this is also the time of lent. and that is to show us that, despite our religions, we’re all one.” “So, I want to use this time to appreciate the leaders here, thank you for your prayers, they are indeed working for the growth of the airports. The development we have seen since we took over are partly due to your continuous prayers and supplications. I want you to take everybody as one, look back on your journey and use this time to think about how you can hold and take people with you on your journey going forward.” “I pray that the Lord and the Almighty Allah answer all of our prayers. I pray that the Almighty Allah looks down upon us. I pray that the Almighty Allah heals us. And I pray that the way that we leave during this holy month is how we continue to live, going forward.” Also speaking on the significance of the occasion, FAAN Director of Airport Operations, Capt. Abdullahi Zubeir Mahmood said the MD was passionate about extending her hand of fellowship to the various religious bodies in the airport community and had chosen to have the Iftar dinner with the muslim faithfuls. Mahmood said “You know this month is the holy month of Ramadan, it is a month of prayers, a month of giving, a month of extending gestures to all families, irrespective of whether somebody is a Muslim or Christian or whatever. Once you have your neighbors, your families, your friends, your coworkers, this is the time for supplication, time for sending gifts. So, the MD considered it of great significance to call on the Muslim community that are literally under her, and even the Muslim community that are within the neighborhood of FAAN, to come and sit down and have Iftar dinner with her.” “You know, the Holy Prophet Mohhamed told us that the best food that you will eat is the food you eat in a gathering with people, that’s when you have the blessing. What you give to somebody is what is your own, but what you eat is just a waste. He added that “Anytime you invite somebody to your place, to come, whatever it is, even if that person is your enemy. By extending that invitation, the person accepts it, there is a blessing in an invitation. You could see how the people are, how passionate they are, and they are looking at this as something that is different, something that is different from its kind. People leave their houses, people that are supposed to have their Iftar with their family, and they all rush. You could see how the FAAN brings families and communities together. So, it’s part of the thing that the MD is initiating, a kind of extending her hand of friendship to people, letting people know that, okay, you are my people. You are my team. Come together. Come to me. Let’s dine together.” The event marked the first time a managing director of FAAN was hosting the Muslim community at the headquarters.

MAYHEM IN RIVERS: PRESIDENT TINUBU DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY.

sacks Governor Fubara, deputy and House of Assembly Text of the Broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, declaring State of Emergency in Rivers state on Tuesday 18 March 2025 Fellow Nigerians, I feel greatly disturbed at the turn we have come to regarding the political crisis in Rivers State. Like many of you, I have watched with concern the development with the hope that the parties involved would allow good sense to prevail at the soonest, but all that hope burned out without any solution to the crisis. With the crisis persisting, there is no way democratic governance, which we have all fought and worked for over the years, can thrive in a way that will redound to the benefit of the good people of the state. The state has been at a standstill since the crisis started, with the good people of the state not being able to have access to the dividends of democracy. Also, it is public knowledge that the Governor of Rivers State for unjustifiable reasons, demolished the House of Assembly of the state as far back as 13th December 2023 and has, up until now, fourteen (14) months after, not rebuilt same. I have made personal interventions between the contending parties for a peaceful resolution of the crisis, but my efforts have been largely ignored by the parties to the crisis. I am also aware that many well-meaning Nigerians, Leaders of thought and Patriotic groups have also intervened at various times with the best of intentions to resolve the matter, but all their efforts were also to no avail. Still, I thank them. On February 28, 2025, the supreme court, in a judgment in respect of about eight consolidated appeals concerning the political crisis in Rivers State, based on several grave unconstitutional acts and disregard of rule of law that have been committed by the Governor of Rivers State as shown by the evidence before it pronounced in very clear terms: “a government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution as amended. In this case the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot. As it is there is no government in Rivers State.” The above pronouncement came after a catalogue of judicial findings of constitutional breaches against the Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Going Forward in their judgment, and having found and held that 27 members of the House who had allegedly defected “are still valid members of Rivers State House of Assembly and cannot be prevented from participating in the proceedings of that House by the 8th Respondent (that is, the Governor) in cohorts with four members” The Supreme Court then made some orders to restore the state to immediate constitutional democracy. These orders include the immediate passing of an Appropriation Bill by the Rivers State House of Assembly which up till now has not been facilitated. Some militants had threatened fire and brimstone against their perceived enemy of the governor who has up till now NOT disowned them. Apart from that both the House and the governor have not been able to work together. Both of them do not realise that they are in office to work together for the peace and good governance of the state. The latest security reports made available to me show that between yesterday and today there have been disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines by some militant without the governor taking any action to curtail them. I have, of course given stern order to the security agencies to ensure safety of lives of the good people of Rivers State and the oil pipelines. With all these and many more, no good and responsible President will standby and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state, which no doubt requires extraordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security. In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State and the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State having failed to make a request to me as President to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th March, 2025 and I so do. By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months. In the meantime, I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State. For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance with their constitutional mandate. The Administrator will not make any new laws. He will, however, be free to formulate regulations as may be found necessary to do his job, but such regulations will need to be considered and approved by the Federal Executive Council and promulgated by the President for the state. This declaration has been published in the Federal Gazette, a copy of which has been forwarded to the National Assembly in accordance with the Constitution. It is my fervent hope that this inevitable intervention will help to restore peace and order in Rivers State by awakening all the contenders to the constitutional imperatives binding on all political players in Rivers State in particular and Nigeria as a whole. Long live a united, peaceful, secure and democratic Rivers

“NIGERIA HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT STRIDES IN ASSETS RECOVERY”_ REV DAVID UGOLOR

Says :”The Recovery Of Stolen Assets Is Only One Step In The Long Journey Toward Justice And Development” By Igbotako Nowinta Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director, Africa Network for Environment & Economic Justice (ANEEJ), has declared that Nigeria has made significant strides in assets recovery. The prominent environmental activist made this assertion on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025, in Abuja, in his welcome address at the Validation Meeting of ANEEJ Research Report On Assessing The Implementation Of Key GFAR Principles In Asset Return And Management In Nigeria, held at Hawthorn Suites And Hotels. Rev. Ugolor said ANEEJ received support from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Nigeria, to carry out this important research and assess how well Nigeria has implemented the Global Forum on Asset Recovery (GFAR) principles with respect to asset recovery and management. According to him: “During this period, ANEEJ worked with researchers and international experts to deliver on this task. In the course of our work, we engaged key stakeholders, including international development partners, government institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), project beneficiaries and the media, through consultation meetings, focus group discussion (FGD), field visits, and other activities to gather factual data and ensure the success of this research. Through this initiative, we have remained committed to advancing accountability and good governance in the return and utilization of recovered assets, in line with the GFAR principles, which emphasize transparency, accountability, citizen engagement, beneficial ownership disclosure and the use of recovered assets for sustainable development”. Rev. Ugolor expansiated further:” As we all know, the recovery of stolen assets is only one step in the long journey toward justice and development. The real impact lies in how these assets are effectively utilized to improve lives, reduce poverty, and strengthen trust in governance. Nigeria has made significant strides in asset recovery, including landmark repatriations such as: $322.5 million Abacha loot in 2017, allocated to social investment programs. $311.8 million recovered in 2020, earmarked for key infrastructure projects. Additional funds retrieved from corrupt public officials. This research, therefore, seeks to assess the level of compliance with GFAR principles in Nigeria’s asset return and management framework. Our goal is to provide evidence-based insights that will inform policy reforms and ensure greater public participation in the return, and utilization of recovered assets”. The celebrated human right advocate hit the nail on the head : “The findings of this research will refine our recommendations and strengthen the advocacy for a more transparent and accountable asset management system in Nigeria. The outcome of this meeting will not only validate our research but also serve as a guide for strategic engagements with policymakers and stakeholders in asset recovery. The report will be transmitted to FCDO and adopted as a working document for evidence-based advocacy in the fight against Illicit Financial Flows”. ANEEJ has been working with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to undertake the research on the review of the implementation of Key GFAR Principles in Asset Return Nigeria. The research has evaluated the implementation of the Global Forum for Asset Recovery (GFAR) principles in the recovery and management of stolen assets, such as the $311.8 million recovered loot from the Bailiwick of Jersey used for legacy projects and the $954,807.40 recovered Alamieyesiegha loot from the United States of America, for Bayelsa State. The key GFAR Principles in focus were those relating to transparency and accountability; inclusion of non-government stakeholders; return of funds to beneficiaries; and the preclusion of benefit to offenders. The research also identified gaps in the current asset recovery process in Nigeria and provided recommendations for improving future asset return agreements.

Nigerians Must Be Ready To Fight For Their Democratic Rights _ NOWINTA

Says “Former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi Was Right About Elitist Manipulations Of Democracy In Nigeria” A prominent  human rights activist and pro-democracy advocate, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta, has urged Nigerians to be ready to fight for their democratic rights at all times. Comrade Nowinta, an international conflict resolution expert, who doubles as Executive  – Director, Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC), disclosed this in an interview with PEOPLE’S STANDARD. The former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, spoke last week in Abuja, at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, where he emphasized that politicians will do anything to remain in power, including stealing, maiming, and killing. Addressing the audience at the event, organised by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, Amaechi stressed the need for political vigilance, warning that power must be fought for rather than expected to be handed over. Comrade Nowinta said Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation under ex- president Muhammadu Buhari was absolutely correct, when he declared: “You are talking and abusing everybody. Nobody has power and will give it to you—not even me. If you want a pastor as president, go and get one.The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power. If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time”. Nowinta posited :”Nigerians must never allow themselves to be intimidated, brow – beaten or cowed into submission, about the facts of the matter concerning democracy in Nigeria. What we have on our hands is a most terrible situation where the votes of majority of Nigerians do not count during election process” According to the full text of the press release: “We at the Nigerian Good Governance Research Centre (NGGC), are of the opinion that democracy is a game of multitudes not a draconian system to be solely and perpetually manipulated by a few individuals for their parochial egocentric desires. And sadly in Nigeria what we see is a barbaric situation where the votes of multitudes are consistently manipulated to serve the wishes and aspirations of a desperate political cabal at the highest quarters” “That is why we are using this medium to state unequivocally that Rotimi Amaechi, ex- Minister for Transportation spoke the naked truth when he declared last week amongst other claims that :”The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power. If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time”. “Former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi was right about elitist manipulations of democracy in Nigeria; he actually made a clarion call to patriotic Nigerians to continue to be alert about placing their political destiny solely in their hands, than expecting any decent democratic behaviors from the elites who are currently grabbing political power after resorting to extreme thuggery, sophisticated electoral manipulations within the system and complete violence”. “No great and prosperous people anywhere in the world got to where they are without furiously and uncompromisingly fighting for their democratic rights, such as we see glaringly in the United States, United Kingdom, and other progressive European countries. Therefore, Nigerians must never allow themselves to be intimidated, brow – beaten or cowed into submission, about the facts of the matter concerning democracy in Nigeria. What we have on our hands is a most terrible situation where the votes of majority of Nigerians do not count during election process”. “It is only the hypocritical beneficiaries of the current suffocating rotten system that will not see anything wrong with what has befallen our country: the consequences of elitist manipulations of the resources of our country is the imposition of one of the most horrific economic system in known history; as the masses are panting for survival”. “We have become captive audience in the hands of a tribe of politicians who are conjuring stories of good governance and economic recovery on total fiction, and a whole bunch of lies and half truths; indeed since May 29th, 2023, our self imposed rulers have perfected a story of heartbreaks, betrayal and dictatorship”. “Because :”The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power”, we must no longer allow them to ply their heinous trade recklessly, no artificial climate of fear should deter us, the ephemerality and transience of political power must vigorously ginger us to doggedly and persistently fight for our democratic rights, come 2027, which will enable Nigerian people to take power, that would  ultimately propel our country to the league of progressive nations of the world”.

Petitioners, Respondents Wait, As NJI Prepares Abuja Venue Of Edo Election Tribunal

By Sebastine Ebhuomhan  Monday, 27th January, 2025. Abuja. Petitioners and respondents of the 2024 Edo State governorship election petition could not resume to trade tackles at the Election Petition Tribunal on Monday, no thanks to the unprepared venue of the hostilities in the Federal Capital City, Abuja. A visit to the new venue of the tribunal situated within the serene atmosphere of the Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad Guest Suites and Apartments of the National Judicial Institute’s Mohammed Bello Centre revealed that the tribunal could not hold on Monday as initially announced. Staff of the Suites and Apartments directed petitioners, respondents, counsels, lawyers, politicians and members of the general public to return on Tuesday. They disclosed that they were just putting the place in a proper shape to host the tribunal. They apologised for the inconvenience the ‘no show’ might have caused interested and expectant citizens. NJI is a big, wide, sprawling and beautiful estate of office and residential blocks. For those who may be planning to travel from outside Abuja, it is a walkable stone’s throw from the Dantata Flyover (Bus Stop) on the Lugbe—Airport Expressway. It is adjacent to the expressway from its location on the Jabi—Karonmajigi Road that also leads to the corporate headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Although effort made to contact the petitioners for their feelings was not successful, it was gathered, however, that the management of NJI had duly informed the Election Petitions Tribunal’s Secretary, Mu’azu Ibrahim Bagudu, Esq., who promptly and duly communicated both petitioners and respondents to stay away. Speaking on the telephone, Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Hon. Samson Osagie (PhD.) confirmed the shift. He said the governor and his ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) were aware of the shift. He expressed optimism of their counsels to resume hostilities to prove the victory of the state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, beyond all reasonable doubts as soon as the venue is ready. Oblivious of the shift, reporters and correspondents of media organizations such as: the Independent Television and Radio (ITV/Radio) station, the Edo Broadcasting Service Television and Radio (EBSTV/Radio) station, and others, who were sent to the tribunal by their organisations, simply had to turn back at the empty venue after making related enquiry. Speaking at the NJI, a proud Edo State citizen and a former House of Representatives aspirant, Mr. Louis Ebodaghe, said he cancelled all his activities for the day just to come and observe the sitting. He said he has been unable to follow the tribunal’s past sessions in Benin City because he could not make the long journeys to Edo State from Abuja, where he lives. That is why, he added, that he was very happy when the Election Petitions Tribunal announced the relocation of its sitting from Benin City, Edo State, to Abuja last weekend. The Notice of Relocation signed by Mr. Bagudu and released on Friday afternoon moved the tribunal’s sitting from Benin to Abuja. It stated, “I am directed to notify all parties that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has been relocated to Abuja at (the) National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road, Abuja, effective from Monday, 27th January, 2025. For further enquiry, contact the Secretary.” Although the movement caught the petitioners, respondents, counsels, lawyers and observers unaware, it was totally not unexpected following several attempts by supporters of political parties to foment violence around the tribunal’s sittings in Benin City. In a particular daring and brazen attempt to undermine the rule of law, judicial independence and popular democracy, a masked, unidentified lone gunman wearing the campaign T-shirt and fez cap of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate and major petitioner, Dr. Akintunde Asuerinme Ighodalo, stormed the venue of the tribunal and sporadically fired live bullets ostensibly aimed at driving fears into the hearts of the judges in order to derail the progress of the petition. As at when the tribunal adjourned and closed doors on Friday in Edo State, it was hearing the case marked: EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024 filed by Ighodalo and others against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Governor Monday Okpebholo, and the APC, challenging the validity of the governorship election results that Okpebholo won on Saturday, 21st September, 2024, by scoring 291, 667 votes (about 51.1 percent) to defeat Ighodalo with 247, 655 votes (about 43.3 percent). The tribunal adjourned on Friday after taking the testimonies of PW11 and PW12. The sitting will now continue in Abuja on Tuesday with the petitioners calling more witnesses for examination and respondents’ cross-examination, especially if the listed schedule of prosecution witnesses sees no further disruption as witnessed last week when some of the petitioners’ witnesses refused to show up to testify.

A TRIBUTE TO A HERO; EMERITUS PROFESSOR AUGUSTINE A.E.ORHUE

A TRIBUTE TO A HERO; EMERITUS PROFESSOR AUGUSTINE A.E.ORHUE It was that eventful day, 10/2/2009, on the floor of the Senate of the University of Benin, Prof A.A.E.Orhue stood up and challenged the illegality in the appointment of the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin and subsequently led a walk out of the red Chambers. His voice and action were amplified by the vigilant Press and it became a defining moment to either acquiesce to illegality or vanquish it in the University of Benin. His name became synonymous with the struggle to demolish official deceit and restore law to its pride of place in our University. It was in the cool evening Dr Festus Iyayi as he then was invited me to see him at his private office located in the same building then with Omega Restaurant. Seated with him was a gentleman I had never meant in my life. It was a moment of ecstasy for me as Dr Iyayi said, “this is Professor Orhue .” That encounter was priceless as I found an older and more illustrious version of myself in pursuit of justice! He had volunteered to use the law to challenge the illegally imposed Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin. He demonstrated thus that he had the courage of his conviction. As a personal friend of the substantive Vice-Chancellor that eventually emerged after the struggle, he served with distinction in helping the Vice-Chancellor to navigate many slippery terrains which space will not permit me to enumerate; he also helped to mediate without hypocrisy to resolve issues that would have embarrassed the University. He was a man in whose life divinity intervened to rescue from disgrace. His Inaugural lecture which was cancelled for frivolous reason(s) with some court jesters  revelling in the unkind act became a reality as the 70 years retirement law came into effect on 11/5/2012  and was announced on the very night 14/5/2012  he was deemed to have retired from the services of the University. The Brutus sword was used to assail his unblemished career by those who served unabashedly in a Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee who sought to please an emperor Vice-Chancellor who pretended to have the power of life and death. The legal victory he secured for the wrongful compulsory termination of his appointment though after  his retirement date, imposed punitive fines on the University for the poor and unacceptable conduct towards this great man. The sacrifices made by him whereby for seven years he headed the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology when all his contemporaries left for greener pastures in the Middle East, preserved that Department and as a testament to his influence, on his 75th birthday, his former students who are authorities in the Medical Field in their own rights organised a lavish birthday party in his honour. This Emeritus Professor sought to bring succour to women who were called barren and in the course of his research activities discovered that he could not succeed without the almighty God. Thus in the course of the Invitro Fertilisation (IVF) procedures, a vital component was a praise, worship, bible study and prayer session that lasted an hour. The results he got were astounding and reassuring. He was indeed a true Knight of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a man of large heart, generous, dependable, loyal to a worthy cause and friend. In the midst of my travails in the hands of the University authorities in October 2014, he left his house at Ugbor Road at 8:00pm in the night to visit me at Ugbowo Police Station to secure my bail though he was unsuccessful due to the resistance by the Divisional Police Officer acting the script of the powers that were. When my official residence was broken into and all my property were confiscated, he visited the scene of the incident and donated handsomely to enable me begin the purchase of household items anew. Space would fail me to eulogise this great man of many distinctions who served God and humanity with his knowledge and skills, who was villified vigorously, but emerged victorious always, a dependable ally, a courageous soul , a leader of worthy causes, a love slave of truth, a teacher extraordinary, a repository of knowledge, a defender of the weak, a philanthropist and a worthy ambassador of Heaven. The earth was enriched indeed by your presence and we celebrate your passage as a true hero. Adieu Emeritus Professor and Knight of St John International. Emmanuel E.I.Irabor, PhD Professor of Industrial Chemistry University of Benin
