SMOKE IN THE KITCHEN: WHY CLEAN COOKING IS A FEMININE ISSUE

by Sustyvibes Lagos, Nigeria   When we think about kitchens, we often envision warmth, family gatherings, and shared meals. However, for countless women and girls in low- and middle-income countries, these spaces are fraught with danger.   The daily act of preparing food can expose us to hazardous smoke from burning traditional fuels like wood and charcoal, leading to serious health risks such as respiratory illnesses and burns.   To make matters worse, women often spend hours each day not only cooking but also gathering fuel. This relentless cycle underscores systemic neglect that acknowledges women’s roles primarily as caretakers rather than addressing their vulnerability to harmful cooking practices.   While it is seen as primarily an environmental or public health challenge, clean cooking fundamentally intersects with gender equality. The burden should not fall disproportionately on women when simple solutions exist to transform their cooking environments into safer spaces for nourishment without sacrificing their well-being or time.   How Traditional Cooking Fuels Affect Women   Across many low and middle income countries, women and children are most affected by cooking with smoky fuels. Wood, charcoal, dung, and crop waste are still the main way of cooking for nearly 2.3 billion people around the world.   That’s according to the 2023 joint report Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report, published by the World Health Organization, the International Energy Agency, the World Bank, and other global partners working on clean energy access.   Household air pollution from these fuels contributes to millions of deaths annually and the majority of these deaths are among women and children. In Nigeria alone, over 120 million people are exposed to harmful smoke from open fires and traditional stoves every day.   This estimate comes from a 2020 study by Sarah Jewitt, Paul Atagher, and Michael Clifford, which highlights the widespread health risks tied to cooking with firewood and other polluting fuels across the country.   Women, often with children in tow, inhale large volumes of smoke for hours every day, seven times a week, and all year round. The health implications include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cataracts, low birth weight, and early mortality.   Young Nigerians hear things like “Pregnant women are not allowed to go near fire,” or “Too much exposure to firewood heat can prevent a woman from giving birth.” Yet, despite all these beliefs and well documented harm, clean cooking has never received the same policy attention or financing as other infrastructure priorities.   And when policies are created, implementation and enforcement efforts are next to zero on the government part. While NGOs and aid groups have the power to organise outreaches and campaigns, they generally lack the absolutely necessary data, access, and resource capacity to bring about real change.   Toxic Cooking Fuels Steal Time, Money and The Future   The use of firewood and other biomass fuels is not only a health hazard but also a time trap. According to the World Health Organization, women in sub-Saharan Africa often spend between 1.5 to 4 hours every day just collecting firewood.   This is time that could be spent in school, at work, or at rest. In urban slums, women are often forced to choose between purchasing fuel and buying food. Cooking becomes a cycle of economic constraint that reinforces gendered poverty.   The issue is made worse by the fact that many women must rely on stove stacking, using multiple types of stoves and fuels to cope with shortages, costs, or cooking needs. In one Nigerian home, you’re likely to find at least three types of cookstoves and the chances of all three using toxic cooking fuels is high.   Lack of access to clean cooking limits women’s mobility, productivity, and autonomy. It curtails their ability to take on income generating activities, engage with impactful passion projects, or further their career. It forces them to rely on traditional roles not because of choice but because of energy scarcity. Women are kept in the kitchen by policy failures as much as by social norms.   Furthermore, the psychological toll of time poverty is seriously overlooked. The mental burden of juggling caregiving, cooking, and fuel collection with no structural support is invisible in most policy debates. Yet this daily pressure diminishes well being, limits rest, and contributes to long term stress related health issues.   Clean Cooking and Reproductive Justice There’s a link between energy access and women’s health. Exposure to biomass smoke during pregnancy has been linked to stillbirth, low birth weight, and developmental delays. In households where cooking is done indoors with poor ventilation, pregnant women face risks that complicate childbirth. All that could be avoided with clean cooking technologies.   Reproductive justice requires that all women have the ability to make safe and healthy choices for themselves and their families. This includes the right to cook without jeopardizing their own health.   It includes the right to raise children in environments not compromised by state neglect or energy inequality. Clean cooking, then, is not a marginal issue, but part of the vast campaign for gender equity in health, safety, and dignity.   When health outcomes are shaped by the absence of clean energy, reproductive rights become entangled with energy justice. Without clean cooking, millions of women face avoidable risks during the most vulnerable periods of their lives.   From Tokenism to Structural Reform Interventions in clean cooking often focus narrowly on distributing improved stoves, many of which do not meet user needs. Some stoves are incompatible with local cooking practices, such as cooking for large households or preparing specific traditional meals. Others require fuel types that are expensive or unreliable.   Women are not passive victims. They are often the first to innovate, adapt, and maintain cooking systems. Yet they are routinely excluded from energy planning, financing mechanisms, and policy development.   In many cases, concerns about safety, such as fear of gas explosions or previous experiences with kerosene related injuries, lead women to reject clean options altogether, even

Transfer of technology: Ogun state govt to partner Santos Aviation

CHUKS OKOH The Ogun state government is ready to train Indigenous youths in aviation carriers to realize their dreams. Chief of Staff to the Ogun State governor,  Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director of Santos Aviation Ltd, Mr. Segun Adesanya, in the government house in Abeokuta, to intimate the government of his intention to contribute to the development of the aviation sector of the state through investment. While welcoming Mr. Adesanya, Dr. Taiwo assured him of the state government’s support in actualizing his project in the state. The COS stated that the new Ogun Airport at Iperu, Remo was full of potential and urged the visiting aviator to take advantage of the project and invest. Also speaking, the Commissioner for Transport for Ogun state, Engr Gbenga Dairo, informed Engr Adesanya that the airport project has been ongoing for the past three years, with its runway built to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft. Engr Dairo disclosed that the airport was given the nod to operate as Sunset Airport but revealed that effort was being put into getting the cargo airport to operate 24 hours as the equipment for that was being awaited. The Commissioner also disclosed that light aircraft were already using the airport but assured them of speedy approval from the NCAA for commercial operations in the next few months. Engr Dairo, who was full of praises for the chief executive officer of Santos Aviation, whom he described as the son of the soil, said the state was considering a curriculum on aviation courses in some technical institutions to enable students interested in aviation to participate. Earlier, while briefing the government representatives on his mission, Engr Adesanya said he intended to give back to society through technology transfer in youth development in the aviation carriers. According to Engr Adesanya, there is a need to involve the state due to the capability of local use in aviation by having potential training for an apprenticeship, which Santos Aviation will sign off the students, and will be eligible to obtain Airframe License from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States after taking the FAA examination. He said it would be done in partnership with local schools, such as technical and polytechnics, with 18 months of training under the FAA certificates in airframe mechanics, amongst others. According to Engr Adesanya, the lack of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities in the country has led to more trained engineers not having the facilities to practice. He, however, noted that when an MRO is sited in Ogun airport, it will ease the already saturated Lagos airport and boost the economy of Ogun state. The Santos boss said there was no room for expansion in Lagos, and Ogun remained a better alternative. Engr Adesanya has been in the aviation industry for over four decades, has worked with Delta Airlines as an aircraft engineer, and has established Santos Aviation Ltd in the United States, providing aircraft management, interior refurbishing, and cargo operation worldwide, among others.

Nigerians Must Be Ready To Fight For Their Democratic Rights _ NOWINTA

Says “Former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi Was Right About Elitist Manipulations Of Democracy In Nigeria” A prominent  human rights activist and pro-democracy advocate, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta, has urged Nigerians to be ready to fight for their democratic rights at all times. Comrade Nowinta, an international conflict resolution expert, who doubles as Executive  – Director, Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC), disclosed this in an interview with PEOPLE’S STANDARD. The former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, spoke last week in Abuja, at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, where he emphasized that politicians will do anything to remain in power, including stealing, maiming, and killing. Addressing the audience at the event, organised by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, Amaechi stressed the need for political vigilance, warning that power must be fought for rather than expected to be handed over. Comrade Nowinta said Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation under ex- president Muhammadu Buhari was absolutely correct, when he declared: “You are talking and abusing everybody. Nobody has power and will give it to you—not even me. If you want a pastor as president, go and get one.The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power. If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time”. Nowinta posited :”Nigerians must never allow themselves to be intimidated, brow – beaten or cowed into submission, about the facts of the matter concerning democracy in Nigeria. What we have on our hands is a most terrible situation where the votes of majority of Nigerians do not count during election process” According to the full text of the press release: “We at the Nigerian Good Governance Research Centre (NGGC), are of the opinion that democracy is a game of multitudes not a draconian system to be solely and perpetually manipulated by a few individuals for their parochial egocentric desires. And sadly in Nigeria what we see is a barbaric situation where the votes of multitudes are consistently manipulated to serve the wishes and aspirations of a desperate political cabal at the highest quarters” “That is why we are using this medium to state unequivocally that Rotimi Amaechi, ex- Minister for Transportation spoke the naked truth when he declared last week amongst other claims that :”The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power. If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time”. “Former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi was right about elitist manipulations of democracy in Nigeria; he actually made a clarion call to patriotic Nigerians to continue to be alert about placing their political destiny solely in their hands, than expecting any decent democratic behaviors from the elites who are currently grabbing political power after resorting to extreme thuggery, sophisticated electoral manipulations within the system and complete violence”. “No great and prosperous people anywhere in the world got to where they are without furiously and uncompromisingly fighting for their democratic rights, such as we see glaringly in the United States, United Kingdom, and other progressive European countries. Therefore, Nigerians must never allow themselves to be intimidated, brow – beaten or cowed into submission, about the facts of the matter concerning democracy in Nigeria. What we have on our hands is a most terrible situation where the votes of majority of Nigerians do not count during election process”. “It is only the hypocritical beneficiaries of the current suffocating rotten system that will not see anything wrong with what has befallen our country: the consequences of elitist manipulations of the resources of our country is the imposition of one of the most horrific economic system in known history; as the masses are panting for survival”. “We have become captive audience in the hands of a tribe of politicians who are conjuring stories of good governance and economic recovery on total fiction, and a whole bunch of lies and half truths; indeed since May 29th, 2023, our self imposed rulers have perfected a story of heartbreaks, betrayal and dictatorship”. “Because :”The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power”, we must no longer allow them to ply their heinous trade recklessly, no artificial climate of fear should deter us, the ephemerality and transience of political power must vigorously ginger us to doggedly and persistently fight for our democratic rights, come 2027, which will enable Nigerian people to take power, that would  ultimately propel our country to the league of progressive nations of the world”.

17 airport runways: Kuku vows to forestall unforseen situations

CHUKS OKOH The managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Mrs Olubunmi Kuku says she is concerned about the safety of the traveling public and Nigerians in general hence urgent need to attend to the 17 Nigeria’s airports’ runways that have exceeded their lifespans and are begging for urgent reconstruction Kuku said it was to forestall unforseen situations, improve safety and ultimately, passenger experience. Kuku, who made these declarations in an interview monitored on Television Continental (TVC) on Thursday , also clarified the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development new position on the construction of a second runway in Abuja airport. She further clarified that the N580 billion earlier mentioned for the reconstruction also include perimeter fencing, in-roads and apron expansion projects of those airports. ” I believe I’ve also just received a number of messages following our outing yesterday at the National Assembly. So I’d like to clarify two things. We have a number of runways in Nigeria today. So we have mentioned to you that there are 22 airports that are owned by the federal government. We also support some airports that are owned by the state. I did make specific reference to airports which had runways that had exceeded their lifespan. The average lifespan of a runway is about 20 to 25 years. A lot of our runways in Nigeria have actually exceeded that time, meaning that we’ve had them for 30 plus 35 years. And what it means is that we need to actually reconstruct those runways. The reconstruction of those runways, the N580 billion that I initially mentioned, is actually for over 17 runways. And it’s not just the runways. It includes the runways. It includes some perimeter roads. It includes fencing. “So I’ve seen some commentary where people are saying, what do they need all of this money for? I encourage you, please just look at Google if you’re in the construction business or in the aviation business to try and understand what it means to build runways, taxiway links, apron expansion work that we need to do, and of course, to make sure that we put a safe environment together for everything that happens on the air side. “Now, the reference that the Honorable Minister made while we were at the National Assembly yesterday was specific to the second runway project that is happening in Abuja, that project was initially awarded to some some consultants and contractors by previous administrations. I believe that from conversations with the ministry, the scope of that project has changed. There’s also been price variations, of course, which is affected by the scope and, of course, FX fluctuations. There’s some additional information that has come on, which the minister has and which, of course, provides him with a lot of discomfort around the numbers that has been provided to him.

BY JAMES IGBINOSA   Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, yesterday up scaled the direct beneficiaries of Delta COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) Programme from from 36,353 to 110,841. This represented an increase of approximately 205 per cent on the initial figure of 36,353 beneficiaries. Governor Oborevwori disclosed this at a town hall meeting with beneficiaries of the (D-CARES) Programme held in Asaba, He said he was happy to hear of the heartwarming and success stories of the beneficiaries and the positive impact of the activities of the D-CARES programme on their lives. He said: “Upon assumption of office as Governor, and in line with the MORE Agenda, we commenced the implementation of a blueprint that will provide more access to opportunities by Deltans, irrespective of their socio-economic status. “Consequently, I approved the release of funds to support the activities of the D-CARES programme across the various delivery platforms. “Edo State Voters Should Reject the Candidates of the godfather”- Dr ISAIAH  OSIFO

BY OSAS IDEMUDIA Political leadership is clearly the problem of Nigeria/ Edo State. I’m desperate for effective political leadership for my country and for my State.By the grace of God, providing health, energy and the resources,I will continue to fight for good political leadership in my State and in my country.I was privileged to school in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom, and I know that the main factor that is responsible for development in the developed world and the backward trend in Nigeria/ Edo State is leadership. The British man or woman is not more intelligent than an Edo man or woman. If you make efforts to convince me that Edo man and woman cannot refine petrol, you are only wasting your time because I will not believe you.If Iam elected as governor of Edo State, the Dons  in UNIBEN, AAU and Auchi Polytechnic will refine petrol in my 100 days in office. We cannot continue with a litre of petrol for almost 900 Naira. Not even one (1) out of the 109 Senators in Nigeria rejected the 160 million Naira jeep for the interest of their Constituency. Not even one(1) out of the 360 House of Rep members rejected the 160 million Naira jeep for the sake of the suffering people in their Constituency. The APC gubernatorial candidate is a Senator and his running mate is a member of the House of representatives. They collected the over priced jeep at the expense of Edo people. In a truly democratic nations,no political party will present such characters as candidates of the party. In any case , they were not elected by the delegates of the APC ,but were nominated by godfathers that are determined to loot the resources of Edo State. They should be rejected by Edo State voters. In 1999 , Edo State ministry of local government and Chieftaincy affairs arranged for a higher purchase of  18 brand new peogeot 504 Best Line official cars for the newly sworn – in local government Chairmen in Edo State.I was the ONLY Chairman out the 18 local government Chairmen in the 1999-2002 set that rejected the official car.You can verify from my colleagues,or any official of the ministry of local government and Chieftaincy affairs in 1999.I politely rejected the new car for reasons that it was not the priority of the people of Uhunmwode Local Government Area that elected me into  office and I didn’t want to add my official car to the financial burden of the local government. My contest for the governorship of Edo State is based on my confidence that I have verifiable patriotic past records and previous achievements in public office that I am proud of and ready to improve upon. I have not said that APGA is the only good political party in Nigeria, but I have evidence to show to the good people of Edo State that APGA has records of producing good characters and performing governors.Peter Obi was governor of Anambra State for two terms on the platform of APGA.Nigerians appreciated his performance as governor of Anambra State and gave him the support for good governance in Nigeria. The present governor of Anambra State,Prof Chukwuma Soludo was elected on the platform of APGA.While Edo State is sinking with a huge debt burden,Prof Soludo in his two years plus as governor of Anambra State has not borrowed a kobo. I share in similar background of University of Nigeria, Nsukka Alumni with governor Peter Obi and Prof Soludo. Our political ideology is similar and I will work to surpass the records of the APGA governors in Anambra State. I’m the first elected Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government Area to reside in Ehor, the headquarters of Uhunmwode Local Government. The Council quarters that I built in Ehor is the largest Council quarters to be found in any part of Edo State .Anybody can go to Ehor to verify. Let no governorship candidate hide under the platform of any political party,or boast with the factors of incumbency.Edo State voters should demand all the candidates to come forward with their history and past achievements that impacted on the lives of their communities or the State. Peter Obi left PDP for LP because of the high nomination fees for presidential primaries. It is not an offense for me to move to APGA if I believe that the nomination fees of my former political party is too high for the common man and that my former political party has been hijacked by one man for the purpose of advising his personal interest. Edo voters should ignore the migration of PDP to APC, and APC to PDP, and elect a candidate, not a political party platform that will work for the people of Edo State. It is obvious that the godfathers are determined to steal the resources of Edo State and they should be disappointed by rejecting their nominated candidates. Dr Isaiah Osifo, APGA Governorship Candidate.
