Comrade Igbotako Nowinta, is the Executive Director, Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre, a renowned pro-democracy and human rights activist.
He recently reacted to the impeachment of Philip Shuiabu the former deputy governor of Edo state in this exclusive interview with people’s standard newspaper
“Philip Shaibu’s impeachment reminds me of mindless manipulation of corrosive democratic power, because the former deputy governor of Edo State is a victim of monstrous travesty of democratic ethos.
But, given his antecedents in power for decades in Edo State, he is not the type of politician that one should show any pity or mercy.
Philip Shaibu is known to have initiated and practiced political thuggery and violence when the going was good and smooth for him.”
He further said, ” his political ambition of becoming the next civilian governor of Edo State, led to his ouster from power by hook and crook, such as the way Edo State House of Assembly crudely perfected his impeachment, is a stark reminder that most practicing politicians in Nigeria are hypocritical manipulators of democratic ethos. For me Philip Shaibu’s impeachment, which is one of the most visible acts of extreme political intolerance, is a blow to democratic sanity and calls to question the meaning of the position of deputy governor in our clime.”
