History was recorded on Tuesday, September 16th, 2025, at the 1000 Capacity Hall of the University of Delta, (UNDEL), Agbor, when a Professor of Industrial Chemistry/ Materials Science, Emmanuel Osabohien delivered the maiden Inaugural Lectures of the University.
Prof. Emmanuel Osabohien, who titled his epochal lecture, “The Material World And Its Knowabilities: The Perspectives of An Industrial Chemist”, used the occasion to call on both Federal and state Governments in Nigeria, to improve on the funding of materials research in the institutions of higher learning, inorder to give room for inventions and innovations, which could lead to the creation of industries that would provide jobs and lower unemployment rate in our society.
Prof. Emmanuel Osabohien, an ardent academic and astute administrator, said there should be synergistic collaboration between government, non-government organizations, universities, polytechnics and research institutes in the development of profitable researches for industrial and economic growth.
Prof. Osabohien argued that industrialization made it possible to produce essential products such as toiletries, textiles, coating (paints), cosmetics, rubbers and plastics, sophisticated desired products, such as the modern buildings, machines, automotives and aerospace products. He however cautioned that “we must endeavor to do our own things, our own way, that is, grow our own indigenous companies and technologies using our available local raw materials for sustainable economic growth and development”
The widely published and travelled academic giant, who also said that the industrial chemist applies chemical knowledge and principles to develop and improve industrial chemical processes, materials and products, posited that Materials Science and Engineering have contributed immensely to the growth and development of the modern world.
Prof. Osabohien who was also of the view that the world was becoming increasingly polluted by the day due to increasing industrialization and human activities, advised that we went the way of green technology, which is, practicing safe industrial production, and use of materials in order to create a green and clean environment; and to grow our indigenous technologies and nurture them into greatness.
The glamorous event which was well attended by the University of Delta community, saw the Pro Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Emeritus Prof. Emmanuel Nwanze in attendance, while the Vice Chancellor, University of Delta, Prof. Stella Chiemeke led the team of Management staff, which included Prof. Patricia Mbah, Deputy Vice Chancellor; Barr.
